Meet Snickers, an eleven-year-old sweetheart with the gentlest soul and the biggest heart. ❤️ She’s the kind of cat who curls into your lap like she’s known you forever. In foster care, Snickers has become an expert cuddler, soaking up every bit of love she can give and receive. Despite everything she’s been through, she still chooses affection first. Right now, Snickers needs a little extra help from our community. She has been diagnosed with severe stomatitis with gingivitis and oral ulceration, a painful dental condition that makes everyday things like eating and grooming uncomfortable. The good news is that with dental surgery and continued medical care, Snickers has the opportunity to feel so much better and enjoy the comfort every senior cat deserves. At eleven years old, Snickers still has so much love left to give. We want her next chapter to be filled with cozy naps, happy meals, gentle head scratches, and the forever home she’s been waiting for. 🚨 Steves to the rescue 🚨 We are now approaching 4,000 mobilized Steves! My favorite parts of this whole ridiculous campaign has been reading the submissions on the Wall of Steves on our website. There are dads named Steve, grandpas named Steve, emotional support Steves, honorary Steves, you name it. Meanwhile, the actual medical reality behind all of this is becoming very real very quickly. Steve’s diagnostics this week confirmed that he will likely need multiple trips to Virginia Tech for surgery to remove OCD lesions (“joint mice”) from his joints. We are also waiting on bloodwork results to determine whether our tiny chaotic son is cryptorchid and may need surgery to remove retained testicles too. 🫠 At the same time, Sundae’s CT scan and orthopedic consult are officially booked for June 2 as we continue trying to figure out the best path forward for her long-term comfort and mobility. Anyway. The horses remain expensive and medically complicated, but thankfully the Steves appear deeply committed to the mission. Find a Steve. Tag 3 Steves. Freedom Day in Salem marks one of the most powerful moments in our community’s history. On May 21, 1865, Reverend Seth Clark of the Ohio 10th Cavalry entered the Afro‑Moravian Brick Church and announced that the enslaved people of Salem were free. We don’t know every name of those who heard that life‑changing news, but one woman who may have been in the room was Elizabeth Jane, also known as “Bethy.” Born around 1821, she was enslaved by the Moravians and forced to labor in John Vogler’s household from 1848 to 1865. Bethy was also a respected member of the Afro‑Moravian congregation, sponsoring others at their baptisms and shaping the spiritual life of her community. After Emancipation, she disappears from Vogler family records, suggesting she claimed her freedom on her own terms. Across the South, newly freed African Americans celebrated with dishes like “Emancipation Proclamation Breakfast Cake,” using seasonal ingredients such as blueberries, lemons, and oranges. These foods symbolized abundance, hope, and a new beginning. This week, our historic interpreters are baking this celebratory cake in the Tavern kitchen as we honor the lives of African Americans like Bethy and celebrate Freedom Day.
