DANDELIONS: Local Artists Bring City Bond-Funded Sculpture to Salem Parkway, “Invasive Hope.” Get the facts and details below: Updated 5/28 for clarity: ⏮️ BACKGROUND: Funding for this installation came from the City of Winston-Salem's 2018 Bond Package, a $122 million referendum of five bond issues approved by voters on November 6, 2018. The entire bond package was financed through a 4-cent increase in the city's property tax rate and was not drawn from the city's annual operating budget. A total of $1.05 million was allocated for this installation. 🧑 WHO? The team behind the project includes local architects, fabricators, and creatives: • Chad Creek (former owner of Elephant in the Room) • Adam Sebastian (@stitchdesignshop) • Drew Gerstmyer (Architect) • Andrew Viator (@viatorconstruction) 🌼 WHY DANDELIONS? The artists chose dandelions to symbolize resilience and hope within the Winston-Salem community. 📍WHERE? The sculptures are located along Salem Parkway, from the Peters Creek Parkway exit to the Church Street bridge. ✨ FUN FACTS: • Each seed stands 5 feet tall and weighs 5.6 lbs • The main dandelion puff features 86 seeds, with nearly 40 scattered on the ground • The primary sculpture weighs 4,347 lbs 📷: @carolineturnerphoto
Calling all parents and high school students 🗣️ We still have a few spots left in our film a/ppreciation summer camp for rising grades 10-12 🍿 This five-day camp give students an in-depth look at each aspect of the filmmaking process through film screenings and discussions. With a curriculum designed by a/perture’s curator and programming director, Jake Laystrom, each day will focus on a specific artist and each film will be preceded by an introduction and followed by a group discussion, specifically highlighting each day’s focus and each artist’s styles and signatures. By exploring film history and film theory through individual disciplines in the filmmaking process, campers will gain a better understanding of the images they consume, and why certain choices were made to bring these stories to life. With a strong foundation here, campers will have a head start in their future careers as filmmakers, critics, programmers, and most importantly, movie lovers.
