Our new a/nime series continues with Liz and the Blue Bird (2018) 🎬 About the film ⬇️ Students and best friends Mizore Yoroizuka and Nozomi Kasaki prepare to play a complex musical duet, “Liz and the Blue Bird”, for oboe and flute. Though they became teammates in their middle school brass band and have played beautifully together ever since, Mizore and Nozomi find that with graduation from high school looming and the duet proving difficult, their friendship begins to buckle under the pressure. Interspersed with the story is the fantasy tale of Liz, drawn like a storybook, contrasting with the crisp realism of the school. From the Triad of North Carolina comes the Gods of Grunge, a 90’s pop and rock band featuring four of the region’s top musicians. Established in 2023, the flannel-clad quartet focused on the formative songs of their own youth, the “Seattle sound” – Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Soundgarden, Alice in Chains and more, that changed the face of 90’s music and culture. They have continued to expand their sonic palette to include pop-rock bands like Matchbox 20, Weezer, and Lenny Kravitz, as well as genre-bending rap (Beck, Beastie Boys, Cake) that also gained popularity throughout the decade. Playing shows throughout the state, they have discovered that they resonate with not only the Gen X’ers that grew up with the music, but that generation’s children who have had it passed down to them.
