Jordan, Yev, and the Smoke Revival gang are participating in the SECU Family House annual fundraiser called “Men Who Cook” in a couple of weeks. At that event, we will be one of 16 teams of men serving up signature dishes to roughly 500 attendees. 🍑 But we want to share that dish with you guys first too! So stop by and try our Peach Tea Glazed Pork Belly with Collard Greens and Cornbread! Make a donation to our team for the fundraiser and be entered to win two tickets to the actual event. Plus, Smoke Revival will be serving up a full menu of delicacies that always sell out. Last Week at Camp: 🏈 Players from the Wake Forest Football team stopped by MLK for a day of fun with Camp Discovery and MLK campers! From playing games and signing autographs to giving away Wake Forest apparel, they made it a memorable experience and left our campers with plenty of smiles and school spirit. 🏃 Sedge Garden Campers stayed active and got plenty of exercise while participating in fun movement activities that kept everyone energized and smiling. 🕷️ MLK Campers showed off their creativity by making some awesome spider crafts. Their imaginative designs were a big hit, and everyone had fun bringing their creepy-crawly creations to life. 🎶 William Roscoe Anderson Jr. Campers had a blast playing Musical Hula Hoops. The game brought lots of laughter, excitement, and friendly competition as campers danced and moved to the music. 🥬 Teens in Action campers spent the morning volunteering at Second Harvest Food Bank, helping support local hunger relief efforts through their service project. WHAT: Hosted by North Carolina Black Repertory Company, the International Black Theatre Festival (IBTF) is held in Winston-Salem every 2 years and attracts creatives from across the country and around the world. NEW ART GALLERY — NCMA Winston-Salem downtown is now open! 🎨 🕰️ BACKGROUND: Founded in 1956 as an artist-run gallery on Trade Street, this institution (formerly SECCA) spent decades at the Hanes estate off Reynolda Road. Now it’s returning downtown, where its story began, while the main campus is closed for renovations through late 2028/early 2029. ➡️ WHAT: A free gallery with contemporary art, a small retail shop, and comfy seating — perfect for remote work, reading, or hanging out. 🔨 WHY: This space allows NCMA Winston-Salem to continue showcasing art and hosting events while the main campus is closed for renovations (reopening late 2028/early 2029). 🎨 ART: The current exhibition, “Unboxed: Art Beyond the Museum,” features works by NC-based artists from the museum’s Portable Gallery outreach program and is on display through August 30. 📅 EVENTS: The gallery will also host events like: • Open Studio — a new adults-only art meetup • Vinyl Lounge — bring your own records and enjoy analog sound with fellow music lovers • Artist Talks — hear from exhibiting artists 🕐 HOURS: Wed, Fri & Sun, 1–5 PM | Thurs, 1–7 PM | Sat, 11 AM–5 PM 📍 400 W. 4th St, Suite 130

This Tuesday! a/perture is excited to welcome director Karla Murthy to discuss her new film THE GAS STATION ATTENDANT with us after our 7:00pm screening 🎬 The film follows a daughter as she reflects on her father's life, weaving the story of his miraculous journey from the streets of India with the realities of life in America. Using recorded phone calls with her dad while he worked nights at a gas station along with home movies past and present, this deeply personal essay film is a meditation on family, the immigrant experience, and the dreams we carry with us. About the director ➡️ Karla Murthy is an award winning director and news producer. Her work was described by the Columbia Journalism Review as “compelling, informative and compassionate.” In her early career, Karla worked as a producer, shooter, and correspondent for several PBS news programs prior to making her directorial debut with award winning film THE PLACE THAT MAKES US. Her latest film, which she'll be discussing with us on Tuesday, has won Best Documentary Feature at the Nashville Film Festival and the San Diego Asian Film Festival.
