🦉 Adventure Camp at Salem Lake explored gemstones and fossils while sifting through sand at the creek. Campers also got a special visit from Owl’s Roost Wildlife Education and learned about Freya the red-shouldered hawk and Strix the barred owl.
🍓 Be Healthy Camp Kids teamed up with Camp Discovery for a hands-on fruit parfait activity. Campers practiced important kitchen safety skills, including how to safely use a knife while creating a healthy treat.
🐾 We also had a special visit from Triad Love on a Leash, bringing smiles and comfort through pet therapy to both Camp Discovery and the Martin L. King Jr. Community Center WePlay Youth Camp. A perfect blend of learning, wellness, and joy.

I may be 12 years old, but I still have so much love to give. As I like to say, "My face may be white, but my heart is gold." ✨
I'm a gentle, easygoing girl who enjoys the simple things in life. A soft dog bed, a leisurely walk, and being close to my people are all I really need to be happy. I walk beautifully on a leash, I'm fully potty trained, and I'm perfectly content spending my days snoozing and soaking up affection. I can sleep in a crate if needed, but I'd much rather be dreaming sweet dreams nearby.
I get along wonderfully with other dogs and have done great with kids of all ages, from elementary schoolers to teenagers. I love being part of a family and fit right into a calm, loving home.
Because I'm a mature lady, I do appreciate a midday potty break during the workday. As long as I get a chance to stretch my legs and take care of business, I'm happy as can be. And if an accident ever happens, I do my best to be considerate and choose an easy-to-clean spot. What can I say? I'm a thoughtful girl!
If you're looking for a loyal companion who will fill your home with comfort, quiet companionship, and unconditional love, I just might be your perfect match. I'm ready to spend my golden years being someone's cherished best friend.

🏀 The Teen League Basketball players put on an incredible performance at the William R. Anderson Center, showing off great teamwork, strong defense, and impressive scoring on the court!
🍴 Our Kids in the Kitchen at Miller Park Community Center mastered kitchen appliances and whipped up tasty meals! Last week, our young chefs took over the kitchen to prepare a delicious lemon chicken pasta with a salad. It was a wonderful way to build confidence while learning to prep and cook a favorite dish from scratch!
🌙 Parents Night Out was a success! Parents were able to have a nice night out while their kids enjoyed a light dinner and played at Miller Park Community Center.

Keeping our artists and their art safe is our top priority. Besides, we’re sure all y’all are out living your best lives in a body of water on the weekends and we don’t blame ya for it! We’ll see you again just in time for super early holiday shopping. In the meantime, be on the look out for special evening events in The Alley and support local Arts District businesses when you can. Meet Luna, an absolutely delightful 4.5-5 year-old looking for a new start after her loving owner fell on hard times. Luna is a smart, curious, super expressive (Awoo-woo-woo) and social girl who's enjoying the perks of her new life with AARF: kongs! tennis balls! fetch! And most of all: FOOD.
As for the basics -
She's house trained, crate trained, super duper food motivated, and dog tolerant (not a candidate for dog parks/free play but non-reactive).
Why she's the very bestest -
She's just SO fun! (and so easy!!) Whether its slowly meandering in the neighborhood to sniff (she's great on leash!), eagerly exploring woods and fields on a long leash, playing fetch, or just hanging outside, Luna is just an amazing companion - especially outdoors. Attentive! Relaxed! And completely in tune with her people. She would be a dream companion for hikers, campers, or people who like to work or spend a lot of time outside.
Her favorite things in the world are fetch and food. It doesn't take much to please this gal!
A few things to think about -
She's a sweetie pie but best not to be in a house with a cat.
She tolerates crates for medical, travel, or boarding but may struggle left alone for long periods. She is mostly very chill around other dogs but can be dominant. Probably best as the solo dog or in a home with a similar sized male (assuming patience and temperament fit).
In short: Luna is a fun, energetic and highly intelligent adult dog. While individual dogs vary, would-be adopters should be realistic about their ability to meet her physical and mental needs - and hopefully excited for the adventure!

We are incredibly proud to see the Winston-Salem Police Athletic League Tee Ball Program making such a positive impact on kids across our community! It has been an honor for the @ymcaofnwnc to partner with so many amazing organizations to help provide a safe, fun and meaningful summer experience for these children!
A huge thank you to the @wspolicefoundation who founded, organized and sponsored this league! And also to our amazing partners @cityofwspolice, @cityofwinstonsalem, @ws_recreationparks and Friendship Missionary Baptist Church for making this possible. Your leadership and servant hearts helped make Opening Day a huge success!
It was also great to see the Mayor, Councilwoman, Police Chief and many other important city officials giving inspiring words to our players!

During Fiscal Year 2024–25, 1,287 children participated in Camp Kaleideum, exploring everything from science and engineering to art, technology, and imaginative play.
Camp Kaleideum 2026 is well underway! This week, campers are tackling challenges in Cardboard Challenge, developing new skills in Creative Coding, and training their superpowers at Superhero Boot Camp. But for some children, these experiences would be out of reach without additional support.
That's why Kaleideum offers Camp Kaleideum scholarships to families with EBT, WIC, or Second Harvest Food Bank Link2Feed cards, helping ensure that more of our community's children have the opportunity to learn, grow, and make lasting summer memories.

This music blends European Classical style with local needs and available instruments, representing some of the earliest chamber compositions created and performed in what would become the United States.

Recently, an unexpected fire damaged part of our facility. One thing became immediately clear: our community would not let our animals face this challenge alone.
Within hours, foster families opened their homes to take in our animals and make sure they were safe, comfortable, and cared for. Because of this response, every animal remained safe.
Today, we are launching our Built on Compassion campaign to help cover fire-related costs and celebrate the incredible community that immediately stepped up to support Forsyth Humane Society.
The fire is behind us. The animals are safe. But unexpected expenses have created a gap at a time when homeless animals still need food, medical care, shelter, and second chances.
Together, we are raising $30,000 to keep lifesaving work moving forward and ensure every animal continues to receive the care they deserve.

Curiosity is one of my favorite things to celebrate. Yesterday we set out to halter Margot so we could put on her fly bo... Curiosity is one of my favorite things to celebrate.
Yesterday we set out to halter Margot so we could put on her fly boots. A few months ago, she would have taken one look at the halter and jogged off to the farthest distance she could reach. That wasn't surprising. When we intercepted Margot from auction, her feet and body told the story of an animal who hadn't received good care in a very long time. Being haltered didn't mean comfort or partnership, was something to avoid. I don't blame her.
Over the last six years, I've had the privilege of learning alongside our incredible trainer, Laura. Together we've challenged a lot of the things I was taught in traditional horse barns. The more I learn, the more I find myself coming back to a simple question: What feels fair to the horse? Not just what gets the job done, but what feels honest.
The honest methods are slower.
When horses first arrive here, we don't spend much time asking anything of them. We let them wander. They watch us muck stalls, drag hoses, carry hay, drive the tractor, feed everyone else. Sometimes they wander over because they're curious. Sometimes they don't. Sometimes there's a treat involved. Sometimes there isn't.
The point isn't to convince them that people always have cookies, it's to let them discover that people don't always have an agenda. Eventually curiosity starts winning over caution.
One day they'll walk a little closer. Then they'll hang around while we scratch another horse. Then they'll sniff the wheelbarrow we're pushing. Then they'll follow us into the barn just to see what we are doing.
By the time I ask Margot to wear a halter, it's never a surprise. She sees it. She knows exactly what I'm asking. If she'd rather leave, she can. I'm not trying to trick her into saying yes. There's something really important about that: because when she finally does say yes, it actually means something.
So this picture is less about the fly boots, and more about Margot standing at the barn door because, for no reason other than her own curiosity, she wanted to see what all the humans were up to.
This is the moment when we know we're heading in the right direction ❤️

We started the day with an update from Sundae at New Bolton Center. The team says she's doing wonderfully, and seeing her standing out in the sunshine nibbling clover with her stuffie horse buddy brought us so much joy.
Back at the farm, Margot Rita pleasantly surprised us by accepting a set of fly boots. That may not sound like much of a story, but for a mule who arrived carrying so much fear, these developments are signs of real progress... Every time she lets us help her, she tells us she's beginning to trust.
We also had the pleasure of welcoming supporter Darcie for a Founder's Tour. The horses were immediately convinced she belonged here. Maddox soaked up the attention, several of the mustangs investigated her thoroughly, and Tango practically claimed her as his own.
Watching Tango open up like is so special. The scared, uncertain horse who arrived not so long ago is slowly discovering that people can be kind.
Sunshine, clover, fly boots, new friends.
Not a bad way to spend a morning. 💙

Chicka is our 3-and-a-half-year-old expert people-watcher, tail-wagger, and cat critic.
Chicka came to us after her family lost their housing and could not bring her with them. She was described as a wonderful family dog who has been loved and cared for throughout her life. 😁
According to her previous caregivers, Chicka has lived successfully with other dogs, including small dogs, and has experience around children of all ages.
She spent much of her life accompanying her family at their business, making her very accustomed to seeing and interacting with people throughout the day.😊
Chicka is looking for a home without cats and someone who can give her all the love and cherish her every day.

🦜 earlier this year i received a commission request from the kaleideum museum to make a weaving of their precious littl... 🦜 earlier this year i received a commission request from the kaleideum museum to make a weaving of their precious little macaw, huey! this was the first time i have ever woven figurative imagery and it was such a fun challenge. the museum collected recycled materials for me to weave with, including some of the feathers huey jettisonned 🪶 each piece of huey's body is made of individual weavings created on my rigid heddle loom, which were then cut into shapes and sewn together like a quilt. i wove the pink background weaving using shiny tinsel for the weft on my 4-harness floor loom. swipe to see a photo of me showing real-life huey his woven twin--he did not seem super impressed!
the completed artwork was inserted into a custom donation box that will be out on the museum floor, so please go feed him some coins 🪙 thank you so much to @kaleideum for approaching me with this project, which was generously funded by the @hanes foundation

Laser shows Tuesday through Sunday at 1 pm
$3 members | $5 non-members (plus museum admission)
Tickets are available at the Welcome Desk or before the show. Arrive early, though, once the show begins, the doors lock!
