For acclaimed harpist and songwriter Mikaela Davis’ new album, Graceland Way (due April 24th), that singularity was a hillside home in Chevy Chase Canyon, a spot nestled in Los Angeles County where time slowed, the world fell away, and Davis could create from a sense of warmth and deep attentiveness. The “canyon country” epic born of that care ties a neo-western future back to the lineage of Laurel Canyon, the mythos of Elvis’s Graceland, and Paul Simon’s restless reinvention—a place where Davis can explore the fragile balance of light and dark, grace and struggle, rose and thorn, as well as the mystical power found at their nexus. The record’s musical big bang originated at the nexus of UHF Studio, where Davis and noted guitarist John Lee Shannon, co-wrote the record and co-produced alongside longtime collaborator Dan Horne. As the album’s story of an unnamed antihero navigating life in a failing world, her harp, his guitar, and their joint melodies weave a mystic depth. That’s immediately evident from the opening track “(Looking Through) Rose Colored Glasses”, a harp glissando burst functioning like a blissful wormhole to a new universe where dark Western tones come aided by Kurt G. Johnson’s pedal steel guitar and transformative harmonies from guest vocalists Madison Cunningham and Tim Heidecker. 🎶 ☀️ Songs To Fill The Air ☀️ 🎶 Belgian-Style Saison brewed w/ Lemon Peel 4.2% ABV Today when we open, this collaboration with our dear friends @divinebarrelclt will be back on draft. Last year, we spoke to their crew about their interest in brewing a saison and they were excited to do it despite the style being a tough sell to most modern drinkers. So we did a 10-barrel batch, brewing it to be a perfect summer crusher with a rustic finish. And y’all embraced it with vigor! It took no time for us to both agree that we had to do it again, and the team at DBB said “let’s double the batch!” We are so appreciative to those guys for being great friends and supporters and being willing to brew this one back up. It’s lovely, light and sunny, with a dry, earthy, soft finish. There will be cans next week available to go, but for now, snag a pint, sit outside, and watch the butterflies dance. Hi, I’m Allison, and it’s been quite a while since I’ve shown my own face around here, so I’m overdue for an introduction. I am very much a person who prefers to be behind the camera instead of in front of it. I’m not quiet or shy - surely you’ve seen I have quite a lot to say 😂 - but I’m not a fan of the limelight. I’d much rather the horses be the ones in the spotlight. That said, there are real people behind this work, and we want you to see that. Josh and I started Red Feather six years ago after learning about the welfare realities of retired Thoroughbred racehorses through my own adopted horse, Mario, who has since passed. I wear a locket of his hair in a necklace that I will never, ever take off. He changed my whole life. Carrying on his legacy is why we’ve dedicated ours to rescuing and advocating for horses in need. Since then, we’ve helped hundreds of animals and supported rescue efforts across species: cows, pigs, goats, cats, dogs, rabbits… you name it. And while this may have started with the two of us, it’s grown into something much bigger. There are now dozens of volunteers and staff showing up every day to care for these animals. And then there’s you. Support doesn’t have to be big or complicated. A lot of the time, it’s as simple as interacting with a post. Commenting, reacting, watching for a few extra seconds... it all helps more people see these horses and understand why this work matters. That’s how these stories travel. So if you’re here, and this work resonates with you, say hello. Tell me where you’re from, what brought you here, or about the animals in your own life. I read more of these than you probably realize. We may have started this, but we’re not doing it alone anymore. And because of that, a lot more of them are here, too. ❤️

He worked at a cafe, explaining the basics of camping to his bewildered colleagues. He tried recording music on the bottom floors of a near-abandoned brownstone. He grew gaunt. And one day, he found himself zip-tied on a couch in his Bushwick sublet, watching as his belongings marched out in the hands of intruders. On Companion, Morris’ home invasion is just another item on the list of subjects ripe for dreamy contemplation, and the list of things Morris dreamily contemplates is long: Moby Dick, God’s will, the real estate market in Durham, scoring coverage on this very website, egg and cheese sandwiches, the flood plane, Pink Moon, his dog’s shadow. He writes in rambling and loose bundles of jokes and observations, often poking fun at himself for his perceived sensitivities. The songs spread outward from Morris’ small voice like paper towel blots. Avery Sullivan, with whom Morris also plays in the country-rock band Fust, keeps loose time on drums, tapping the snare like someone setting down coffee mugs while Libby Rodenbough scrapes out a few melody lines on her fiddle and colors empty spaces with some ghostly tremolo. But that’s about it. As a devoted Williamsburg family and lovers of all things colonial, we have been trying to get out to @oldsaleminc since moving to NC in 2021. Somehow, the timing just never aligned — Until now. 🙌🏻 We finally visited this historic carve-out, and let me tell you: We are now full-fledged members. I have the card to prove it. For those who don’t know, Old Salem, a National Historic Landmark since 1966, is a historic district of Winston-Salem, originally settled by the Moravian community in 1766. As a Bucks County native and @perkiomenschool girlie, I love all things Moravian, so being here I felt completely in my element 🥰 The “town” feels a lot like @colonialwmsburg, and showcases the Moravian settlement culture through communal buildings, churches, houses and shops. When you visit, your ticket includes access to historic buildings and tours, as well as trade shoppes like the silversmith and the joinery, where you can watch real live artisans and tradesmen at work. Old Salem also features open-to-the-public experiences like a bake shop, tavern/restaurant, cafe, and coffee shop, in addition to a living-history museum featuring Moravian art and artifacts from the 18th century and beyond. Visit these sites and bites any time, even without a ticket. (And if you’re not into colonial history, there’s also a plaque honoring the site of the first @krispykreme on location, so there’s truly something for everyone)🍩 During our two-hour excursion, we learned about Moravian life, the importance of tradecraft in North Carolina, and the value of women in Moravian society, among countless other tidbits. What blew my preservation mind were the private residences tucked along the streets — There are people lucky enough to live out their colonial dreams right here in Camel City! Talk about a new life goal unlocked 🔓 The food was delicious, the grounds were utterly serene, and the docents’ knowledge was limitless. We didn’t even get to see all of the sites during our visit, and Holden has said he wants to return again and again, he loved it so much. We will be back many times, as we collect as many colonial moments as we can right here in

We have something exciting to report… A team of very serious professionals (allegedly) has reached out to study Margot’s forelock and determine how, exactly, she’s achieving this level of volume. Current working theories include elite genetics, a highly exclusive conditioning regimen, and the possibility that she’s been sneaking off for a daily blowout (Margot declined to comment). We’ll keep you posted as the investigation unfolds… 👀✨
Meet Jax! 🤩 Jax is our beautiful 4-year-and-10-month-old black cat. He weighs almost 12 pounds and is such a joy to be around. Jax has been in foster care to take some time away from the shelter, and his foster has left him some amazing notes below!⬇️ Jax is enjoying his vacation from the shelter! He is such a calm kitty. Once he settles into the beanbag for the day, you can expect him to be there for the next 8 hours. He has a very soft, sweet meow when he wants something from you (always just pets), and he does great with other cats! Really has no interest in them and will just mind his own business. When he’s not sleeping all day and being the most laid-back and chill dude, he can be found breaking into air-tight containers to access the treats, or opening doors! Fast forward to a year later and they are best friends! We couldn't have picked a better addition for our family. Her favorite activities have been chewing on cardboard boxes, taking our spot on the couch, chasing string toys, and staring at us in the middle of the night. Cinder (aka Cindy Lou, Cinderella) received an A+ from Dr. Thrift at her one-month checkup following emergency colic surgery at Virginia Tech. She’ll remain on layup for another two months. This was a major abdominal surgery, and recovery takes time, a long time. We are incredibly fortunate the surgical team was able to resolve her impaction without needing to remove any intestinal tissue. That outcome is everything, and it underscores just how critical it is to take colic seriously and get horses to a hospital as quickly as possible. Even with the best-case outcome, Cinder has a significant incision along her belly. It will take months of careful healing before she’s ready for full turnout with the herd. In the meantime, our amazing team has been walking her by hand multiple times a day ... slow, steady steps forward. She’s shed her winter coat and revealed the most beautiful roan coloration, a little nod to her wild roots from the Devil’s Garden herd. She’s a blessing. Thank you for standing with her. One year ago today Lilly found her forever home! #HappyTail "Lilly’s gotcha day was March 31st, 2025. She is reactive to strangers and very fearful of most other dogs. This is her graduation picture at WSDTC for basic obedience, her second round of classes and she is going in for her third round April 1st. It will take a lot of work and patience but we see little improvements at each class. She is a sweet little girl and a fantastic hugger! She is also my alarm clock as when she gets hungry, you don’t get any sleep until she is fed. She will drag all the covers off and bark until you give in. So much personality in such a little package" This is what we love to see!

☀️ Easter Sunrise Service 🌄 If you've lived in Winston-Salem for any amount of time you've likely attended or at least heard about the annual Easter Sunrise Service at Home Moravian Church, located in Old Salem, followed by the serene walk to God's Acre. Mark Wright, a member of Homr Moravian Church, band member, and Technical Director for the Easter Sunrise Service livestream, shares an in-depth look at this annual tradition, some stories from over the years and the work involved in this event in our April-May issue. 📖 Here is a little piece of one of the stories featured: Mary Jane Dewees was born on Easter Monday. Her father, Fred Pfaff, had told her mother, “If you want me to be there, you’ll have to wait, because I’m going to be playing in the band for the Sunrise Service on Sunday morning.” “And so I waited until Monday to come,” Dewees says. “Wasn’t that nice of me?” She later joined thr band herself and this year will be her 78th year in the Easter morning band. 📍 529 S. Last week at Recreation and Parks: 🚀 Our Mars Explorers at Sedge Garden Community Center took a high-tech leap into the world of STEM! It was incredible watching these future engineers bring their space missions to life by building and operating their very own rovers. 🐟 Our young explorers kicked off a new session of Nature Kids! Series 1 dove deep into the world of fish, while our Series 2 group took to the skies to learn all about birds. It was a wonderful morning getting a closer look at the amazing wildlife that calls Salem Lake home. 🦉 💧 We had an incredible day of conservation at Salem Lake for Forsyth Creek Week! Participants got to sample macroinvertebrates from the creek and headed into the microscope lab to examine their findings. 🌱 Our volunteers also made a direct impact by live-staking to restore the shoreline and protect our wildlife habitat. A huge thank you to everyone who helped keep Salem Lake healthy and beautiful! 🌮 Our Kids in the Kitchen at Miller Park Community Center have been mastering kitchen appliances and whipping up tasty treats! Last week the group prepared a fresh taco feast and blended refreshing fruit smoothies. 🏃♂️ Everyone stayed moving at Active Afternoon with Specialized & Adaptive Recreation at the Hanes Hosiery Community Center! It was a great way to stay active and enjoy some healthy fun with friends. If you missed out, don’t worry! Meet our sweet girl, Cheyenne. 🤍 At nearly six years old, Cheyenne seems to be deaf, but that doesn’t slow her down one bit. She’s full of joy and loves life just the same. Her happy spirit shines through in everything she does. She’s been thriving in foster care, where she’s discovered just how much she loves cozying up in a lap for long, peaceful naps. When she’s not snuggled up, you can find her playing tag and chase with her foster sibling in the backyard. After a good play session, she’s more than ready to curl up with her favorite people again.🥰 Cheyenne is currently undergoing treatment for heartworms, and we recommend continuing her care with your local veterinarian to keep her on the path to a healthy, happy life. ➡️ If you’re looking for a loving, playful companion with a heart of gold, Cheyenne is your girl. Join us as we explore the woods at a gentle pace and discover plants and animals along the way, followed by sitting together for a children’s story. April’s Read & Road will be at Miller Park on Wednesday, April 1 at 10:15 a.m. 🗓️ Come to Hanes Hosiery Community Center at 6 p.m. on April 1 to celebrate Spring by painting and dyeing eggs. 🗓️ Bring your brushes to Polo Park Community Center for the final Follow Along Paint Night at 7 p.m. on Thursday, April 2. Classes are $10 per painter. 🗓️ The Recreation & Parks administrative offices and recreation centers will be closed for the holiday on Friday, April 3.
