Curiosity is one of my favorite things to celebrate. Yesterday we set out to halter Margot so we could put on her fly bo... Curiosity is one of my favorite things to celebrate.
Yesterday we set out to halter Margot so we could put on her fly boots. A few months ago, she would have taken one look at the halter and jogged off to the farthest distance she could reach. That wasn't surprising. When we intercepted Margot from auction, her feet and body told the story of an animal who hadn't received good care in a very long time. Being haltered didn't mean comfort or partnership, was something to avoid. I don't blame her.
Over the last six years, I've had the privilege of learning alongside our incredible trainer, Laura. Together we've challenged a lot of the things I was taught in traditional horse barns. The more I learn, the more I find myself coming back to a simple question: What feels fair to the horse? Not just what gets the job done, but what feels honest.
The honest methods are slower.
When horses first arrive here, we don't spend much time asking anything of them. We let them wander. They watch us muck stalls, drag hoses, carry hay, drive the tractor, feed everyone else. Sometimes they wander over because they're curious. Sometimes they don't. Sometimes there's a treat involved. Sometimes there isn't.
The point isn't to convince them that people always have cookies, it's to let them discover that people don't always have an agenda. Eventually curiosity starts winning over caution.
One day they'll walk a little closer. Then they'll hang around while we scratch another horse. Then they'll sniff the wheelbarrow we're pushing. Then they'll follow us into the barn just to see what we are doing.
By the time I ask Margot to wear a halter, it's never a surprise. She sees it. She knows exactly what I'm asking. If she'd rather leave, she can. I'm not trying to trick her into saying yes. There's something really important about that: because when she finally does say yes, it actually means something.
So this picture is less about the fly boots, and more about Margot standing at the barn door because, for no reason other than her own curiosity, she wanted to see what all the humans were up to.
This is the moment when we know we're heading in the right direction ❤️

This morning felt a little bit magical. We started the day with an update from Sundae at New Bolton Center. The team say... This morning felt a little bit magical.
We started the day with an update from Sundae at New Bolton Center. The team says she's doing wonderfully, and seeing her standing out in the sunshine nibbling clover with her stuffie horse buddy brought us so much joy.
Back at the farm, Margot Rita pleasantly surprised us by accepting a set of fly boots. That may not sound like much of a story, but for a mule who arrived carrying so much fear, these developments are signs of real progress... Every time she lets us help her, she tells us she's beginning to trust.
We also had the pleasure of welcoming supporter Darcie for a Founder's Tour. The horses were immediately convinced she belonged here. Maddox soaked up the attention, several of the mustangs investigated her thoroughly, and Tango practically claimed her as his own.
Watching Tango open up like is so special. The scared, uncertain horse who arrived not so long ago is slowly discovering that people can be kind.
Sunshine, clover, fly boots, new friends.
Not a bad way to spend a morning. 💙

Chicka is our 3-and-a-half-year-old expert people-watcher, tail-wagger, and cat critic.
Chicka came to us after her family lost their housing and could not bring her with them. She was described as a wonderful family dog who has been loved and cared for throughout her life. 😁
According to her previous caregivers, Chicka has lived successfully with other dogs, including small dogs, and has experience around children of all ages.
She spent much of her life accompanying her family at their business, making her very accustomed to seeing and interacting with people throughout the day.😊
Chicka is looking for a home without cats and someone who can give her all the love and cherish her every day.

🦜 earlier this year i received a commission request from the kaleideum museum to make a weaving of their precious littl... 🦜 earlier this year i received a commission request from the kaleideum museum to make a weaving of their precious little macaw, huey! this was the first time i have ever woven figurative imagery and it was such a fun challenge. the museum collected recycled materials for me to weave with, including some of the feathers huey jettisonned 🪶 each piece of huey's body is made of individual weavings created on my rigid heddle loom, which were then cut into shapes and sewn together like a quilt. i wove the pink background weaving using shiny tinsel for the weft on my 4-harness floor loom. swipe to see a photo of me showing real-life huey his woven twin--he did not seem super impressed!
the completed artwork was inserted into a custom donation box that will be out on the museum floor, so please go feed him some coins 🪙 thank you so much to @kaleideum for approaching me with this project, which was generously funded by the @hanes foundation

Willow is sweet and social. She loves playing with her foster siblings, both animal and human. She is exceedingly gentle but occasionally forgets just how big she is. This girl loves to run, tug and wrestle. After playing she enjoys a long nap on a couch. She most enjoys being with her people, and can often be found underfoot, despite her size. Willow can be shy at first and takes a little time to warm up in new situations. She does not respond well to raised voices or being pushed too quickly. She is, however, a very quick learner and responds exceedingly well to patience and calm training techniques. While large, she is still very much a puppy, prone to chewing and zoomies when she hasn’t had enough exercise or mental stimulation. She is working on being brave while walking on a leash. She knows sit, down, and paw. She is crate-trained, house-trained, and does well with other dogs and cats

Bella is four years old and absolutely adores people and loves soaking up attention from her favorite humans. Whether she's leaning in for pets, asking for a little extra affection, or rolling over for a belly rub, she's happiest when spending time with her people.
This sweet girl enjoys exploring the outdoors and would thrive in a home with a big backyard where she can stretch her legs and investigate at her own pace. She loves a good game of fetch, though she may not always bring the ball straight back!🤭
She would do best as the only dog in the home so she can enjoy all the love and attention for herself. She also does well with children and would make a wonderful family companion.
Like many dogs, she may need a little time to settle into a new environment, but her confidence continues to grow every day. She can be vocal and may greet new sights and sounds with a protective bark, but once she feels comfortable and secure, she settles in nicely.😁
She is currently undergoing treatment for heartworms (HW+) while in our care and will go home with medication to continue her treatment plan.
If you're looking for a loyal, affectionate companion who loves people, outdoor adventures, and being part of the family, this special girl may be the perfect match for you! ❤️

In December 2025, for the first time, an independent veterinarian was permitted to inspect NYC's carriage horses on behalf of the city. Until now, veterinary oversight has largely been controlled by the industry's own veterinarian.
What the vet report documented:
• Being denied the ability to perform trotting exams. • Being denied bloodwork that could have revealed systemic disease or the use of pain-masking medications. • Hostile and uncooperative behavior from industry representatives. • Stalls that were too small for some of the larger draft and draft-cross horses. • Scarring consistent with a history of ill-fitting harness equipment. • Hind limb swelling. • Horses in need of dental care.
The industry's response to independent oversight should concern every New Yorker and everyone following this issue.

Well friends, that I can say with confidence, I am doing. If you've ever wanted to push your nervous system to its absolute limits, I highly recommend opening an animal sanctuary.
The need never stops. It arrives every morning with the sunrise and follows you to bed at night. It beats like a drum. Sometimes it carries you forward. Sometimes it threatens to pull you under.
This month, you've watched me cry. You've watched us lose Steve, watched Sundae head into surgery. You've watched us fight for lives that other people had given up on.
And now I'm asking. No, I'm begging. We've raised just over 1/4 of what we need for Sundae's surgeries. One quarter. And the truth is that I don't know where the rest will come from.
I've written the letters. Sent the emails. Made the calls. Reached out to every Steve I can think of. Somewhere out there are more people who believe that a tiny horse with crooked legs deserves a chance at a full life. I'm just trying to find them.
Despite the exhaustion, despite the grief, despite the moments where I wonder how much longer I can carry all of this, I still believe, to the point of tears, that prevention & sanctuary matter. And I believe that Sundae deserves the opportunity to grow up.
So today, I am setting my pride aside and asking for help.

The deaths of Deniz, the carriage horse, and an 18-year-old young man are weighing heavily on my heart.
Today, I received the independent veterinary report commissioned by New York City. What it revealed was deeply troubling. According to the veterinarian, horse owners did not permit bloodwork or trotting examinations, preventing a full assessment of fitness for work. Multiple horses could not be fully evaluated for lameness. The report also documented visible harness and tack-related sores and scarring, horses in need of dental care, concerns about stall conditions and lack of turnout, and at least one horse whose hind limb issues were described as incompatible with work. Several horses were not even presented for examination.
For years, we’ve been told that the horses are “thoroughly monitored and protected.” This report raises serious questions about whether that oversight is truly happening. We will make the report available on our site tomorrow.
Two lives have now been lost within days of each other. We cannot continue responding to these tragedies with promises of more studies, more discussions, and more delays.
Now is the time to pass Ryder’s Law.

The TWU has announced that Sampson has been “retired.”
But what does that actually mean?
When people hear the word retired, they picture a horse living out his days in a green pasture, free from work and surrounded by proper care.
That is the image the word is intended to create.
Yet the public is rarely provided documentation showing where retired carriage horses go or what ultimately becomes of them.
The TWU has long resisted transparency.
At this point, no one outside the industry knows what Sampson’s future will be.
The uncertainty of his fate is what makes this moment even harder to watch.
When the TWU says the horse has been “retired” this is usually what they mean.
Sampson be returned to the Amish farm he came from and be worked to death- living the rest of his life in misery and pain.
Sampson will remain in industry custody while legal proceedings unfold.
Sampson will be sent to auction or will be euthanized.
Sampson did nothing wrong. He is a horse.
Their instinct to flee when frightened is not a behavioral defect—it is a survival mechanism that has kept them alive for thousands of years.
The question is why we continue placing horses in an environment with constant stress, then act surprised when their natural instincts take over.
Sampson is not the problem.
The carriage industry is.
How many more horses have to suffer?
How many civilians have to be injured or killed before New York acknowledges that horse-drawn carriages do not belong on city streets?
This week alone, a horse died from having access to poisonous forage because the driver was not paying attention. A teenager died because the driver left his post to take a picture. A carriage driver may face prison for manslaughter. And horse named Sampson is no where to be found.
We need to pass Ryder’s Law.
This is a bill that supports the residents, tourists, horses and carriage drivers.

While the carriages are not operating, the horses are paying the price.
Over 130 horses are confined to small stalls with limited opportunity for movement.
Horses are designed to move throughout the day, and their digestive systems depend on that movement. Prolonged confinement will contribute to serious health and welfare concerns, including an increased risk of colic- one of the leading causes of death to the carriage horses.
This shutdown has also exposed a significant gap in contingency planning for the carriage industry.
When operations ceased, there appeared to be no established secondary location where horses could be relocated to pasture, graze freely, and live in a manner consistent with their behavioral and welfare needs.
There is no scalable transportation plan to move large numbers of horses to nearby farms or appropriate facilities, and no clear strategy for providing adequate turnout, socialization with other horses, or access to grazing during an extended shutdown.
Instead, the industry’s solution appeared to be keeping horses confined to urban stables and relying on brief walks around city blocks.
But horses are grazing animals designed to spend the majority of their day moving, foraging, and interacting with other horses.
A short walk on pavement is not a substitute for turnout, pasture access, or a life that allows horses to engage in their natural behaviors.
As we have stated - this is an animal welfare, public safety and emergency management issue and the only solution is Ryder’s Law which ends the industry altogether.

In celebration of important day, we are excited to partner with @triadculture to present one of the most iconic films directed by a Black filmmaker in history: Greased Lightning. Get tickets now for this special Juneteenth showing on Sunday, June 21st at 4:15pm.
This underseen film stars Richard Pryor as Virginia’s own Wendell Scott, the first Black stock car racing driver to win an upper-tier NASCAR race. The film was directed by Black filmmaker, Michael Schultz, who also directed Cooley High (1975) and Car Wash (1976) immediately prior to this film. Released in 1977 but largely set in post-war Virginia, the film doesn’t shy away from the prejudice that Wendell Scott faced not only as the first champion Black stock car driver, but as a man trying to establish a living for himself and his family.
An all-star supporting cast includes Pam Grier (Coffy, Jackie Brown) as Scott’s wife, Cleavon Little (Blazing Saddles) as his childhood best friend and de-facto racing manager, and Richie Havens as his mechanic, who is best known as the musician who opened Woodstock. A winning biopic focusing on Black excellence and the importance of family, Greased Lightning is charming, thrilling, and an unexpected dramatic showcase for Richard Pryor.

He was taken to the EV very early this morning, has a catheter put in place to unblock him, and is currently being watched for the next 24 hours. This is to help prevent kidney failure or bladder rupture until we can get him appropriate treatment asap but is not a permanent solution at all. Although what he needs is a very easy treatment, it is incredibly expensive. We would be so grateful for your help to save this boys life, as our only other alternative would be euthanasia. It’s been a very difficult few days here at home, as one of our kiddos lost a recent rescue a couple days ago. Unrelated to this issue, unfortunately it was a failure to thrive, as they were found without their mother and were much too young to have been on their own. Fae rushed him to the vet the moment she noticed something was wrong but unfortunately there wasn’t anything that could be done for him. Khonshu, who’s been with us for almost two years, has a chance. We know exactly what’s wrong and what he needs, we just need help getting him that. Please consider donating, and if you can’t, please please please share. Again, it is a VERY urgent situation.

That's why Kaleideum participates in Museums for All, a national initiative that helps make museum experiences more accessible for families. Through the program, guests with an EBT, WIC, or Second Harvest Food Bank Link2Feed card can visit Kaleideum for just $3 per person.
During Fiscal Year 2024–25, Kaleideum welcomed 25,889 visits through Museums for All, representing a $271,835 investment in opening the door to hands-on learning, discovery, and play for more of our community's children and families.
Behind every one of those visits is a child discovering something new, a family learning together, or a moment that opens the door to new interests, new ideas, and new possibilities.
Because every child should experience where learning and fun collide.

With her stunning ice-blue eyes and playful spirit, Kodia is impossible not to love. This beautiful Husky came to AARF pregnant, raised and weaned her 7 puppies, and is now ready to find a forever home of her own.
Kodia still has the heart of a puppy and loves zoomies, toys, treats, and spending time with her people. After a good play session, she's happy to curl up beside you for some attention and affection. She's house-trained, social, and has done well with other dogs.
After being such an amazing mom, it's finally Kodia's turn to be spoiled!
