"The March to Kings Mountain" explores the journey of the Overmountain Men through maps, documents, and artifact images, and looks at what compelled local men to fight at Kings Mountain, the events of the 1780 battle, and its contribution to the ultimate victory of the Patriots.
Published by America 250 NC, the exhibit will be on display in the Old Salem visitor center from July 1-August 29.

This is the hearing we’ve been fighting for.
On Wednesday, July 15, the NYC Council Health Committee will hold a City Hall public hearing on Romanch’s Law (Intro 943), formerly named Ryder’s Law but renamed in honor of the teenager who was tragically killed June 18th by a runaway carriage.
Romanch’s Law will permanently END NYC’s horse carriages and offer carriage horses the retirement they deserve in loving sanctuary homes where they can finally run free on grass.

Select the “Committee on Health” hearing on July 15 at 10:00 AM. You can testify in person, by Zoom, or in writing, but IN PERSON is most effective.
Last month, 16-year-old carriage horse Deniz collapsed and died while pulling tourists.
One week later, 18-year-old Romanch Mahajan was killed in the eighth violent horse carriage incident in the past year. No amount of new regulations or “reforms “can prevent the next horse from spooking and killing someone. It must be ended.
At the July 15 hearing, Romanch’s devastated family will be joined by equine experts, national animal welfare organizations, local advocates, concerned New Yorkers, and horse sanctuaries.
But we can’t do it alone. We need you there!

🎇 Keep your fireworks securely locked away until you're ready to light them. Never underestimate your pet's level of curiosity, and keep them far away from fireworks.
🔥 Always keep matches and lighter fluid out of your pet's reach.
☀️ Do not apply any sunscreen or insect repellent products that aren't labeled for specific use on animals. Always read the labels before applying to your pet.
🗑️ If you set off fireworks at home, make sure you thoroughly clean up the area afterward. Make sure all trash and any remaining materials from the fireworks are picked up before allowing your pet access to the area again.
💥 If your pet has a fear of loud noises, there are a couple of ways you can help. Something as simple as turning on music, moving your pet to an interior room with no windows, or partnering with your veterinarian to discuss anti-anxiety medication.

Our coalition was created to help ensure that every carriage horse has the opportunity to retire safely if Romanch's Law passes. We are working to identify qualified placements, coordinate resources, and stand ready to support this transition from start to finish.
We want New York City Council to know that there is a network of experienced horse people prepared to help. No horse should be left behind because of uncertainty about what comes next.
If you operate a rescue or sanctuary, have the experience and capacity to provide a home, or simply want to stand alongside those who do, we invite you to join us.
Together, we can show City Council that there is a responsible path forward—one that protects every horse while finally bringing this outdated industry to an end.

There is plenty of free parking surrounding the IH breweries - this lot continues to be a pain and an impact to the experience.
We continue to fight to find a solution. We continue to press the issue that these practices are predatory and unfair.
We need your help to get the lot owners (and the City through ordinance or some code enforcement) to: improve signage, make clear the penalty and fines associated and improve the app in which customers are forced to use.

🦉 Adventure Camp at Salem Lake explored gemstones and fossils while sifting through sand at the creek. Campers also got a special visit from Owl’s Roost Wildlife Education and learned about Freya the red-shouldered hawk and Strix the barred owl.
🍓 Be Healthy Camp Kids teamed up with Camp Discovery for a hands-on fruit parfait activity. Campers practiced important kitchen safety skills, including how to safely use a knife while creating a healthy treat.
🐾 We also had a special visit from Triad Love on a Leash, bringing smiles and comfort through pet therapy to both Camp Discovery and the Martin L. King Jr. Community Center WePlay Youth Camp. A perfect blend of learning, wellness, and joy.

I may be 12 years old, but I still have so much love to give. As I like to say, "My face may be white, but my heart is gold." ✨
I'm a gentle, easygoing girl who enjoys the simple things in life. A soft dog bed, a leisurely walk, and being close to my people are all I really need to be happy. I walk beautifully on a leash, I'm fully potty trained, and I'm perfectly content spending my days snoozing and soaking up affection. I can sleep in a crate if needed, but I'd much rather be dreaming sweet dreams nearby.
I get along wonderfully with other dogs and have done great with kids of all ages, from elementary schoolers to teenagers. I love being part of a family and fit right into a calm, loving home.
Because I'm a mature lady, I do appreciate a midday potty break during the workday. As long as I get a chance to stretch my legs and take care of business, I'm happy as can be. And if an accident ever happens, I do my best to be considerate and choose an easy-to-clean spot. What can I say? I'm a thoughtful girl!
If you're looking for a loyal companion who will fill your home with comfort, quiet companionship, and unconditional love, I just might be your perfect match. I'm ready to spend my golden years being someone's cherished best friend.

🏀 The Teen League Basketball players put on an incredible performance at the William R. Anderson Center, showing off great teamwork, strong defense, and impressive scoring on the court!
🍴 Our Kids in the Kitchen at Miller Park Community Center mastered kitchen appliances and whipped up tasty meals! Last week, our young chefs took over the kitchen to prepare a delicious lemon chicken pasta with a salad. It was a wonderful way to build confidence while learning to prep and cook a favorite dish from scratch!
🌙 Parents Night Out was a success! Parents were able to have a nice night out while their kids enjoyed a light dinner and played at Miller Park Community Center.

Meet Luna, an absolutely delightful 4.5-5 year-old looking for a new start after her loving owner fell on hard times. Lu... Meet Luna, an absolutely delightful 4.5-5 year-old looking for a new start after her loving owner fell on hard times. Luna is a smart, curious, super expressive (Awoo-woo-woo) and social girl who's enjoying the perks of her new life with AARF: kongs! tennis balls! fetch! And most of all: FOOD.
As for the basics -
She's house trained, crate trained, super duper food motivated, and dog tolerant (not a candidate for dog parks/free play but non-reactive).
Why she's the very bestest -
She's just SO fun! (and so easy!!) Whether its slowly meandering in the neighborhood to sniff (she's great on leash!), eagerly exploring woods and fields on a long leash, playing fetch, or just hanging outside, Luna is just an amazing companion - especially outdoors. Attentive! Relaxed! And completely in tune with her people. She would be a dream companion for hikers, campers, or people who like to work or spend a lot of time outside.
Her favorite things in the world are fetch and food. It doesn't take much to please this gal!
A few things to think about -
She's a sweetie pie but best not to be in a house with a cat.
She tolerates crates for medical, travel, or boarding but may struggle left alone for long periods. She is mostly very chill around other dogs but can be dominant. Probably best as the solo dog or in a home with a similar sized male (assuming patience and temperament fit).
In short: Luna is a fun, energetic and highly intelligent adult dog. While individual dogs vary, would-be adopters should be realistic about their ability to meet her physical and mental needs - and hopefully excited for the adventure!

It's about building confidence, discovering new interests, making friends, solving problems, and creating memories that last long after summer ends.
During Fiscal Year 2024–25, 1,287 children participated in Camp Kaleideum, exploring everything from science and engineering to art, technology, and imaginative play.
Camp Kaleideum 2026 is well underway! This week, campers are tackling challenges in Cardboard Challenge, developing new skills in Creative Coding, and training their superpowers at Superhero Boot Camp. But for some children, these experiences would be out of reach without additional support.
That's why Kaleideum offers Camp Kaleideum scholarships to families with EBT, WIC, or Second Harvest Food Bank Link2Feed cards, helping ensure that more of our community's children have the opportunity to learn, grow, and make lasting summer memories.

Recently, an unexpected fire damaged part of our facility. One thing became immediately clear: our community would not let our animals face this challenge alone.
Within hours, foster families opened their homes to take in our animals and make sure they were safe, comfortable, and cared for. Because of this response, every animal remained safe.
Today, we are launching our Built on Compassion campaign to help cover fire-related costs and celebrate the incredible community that immediately stepped up to support Forsyth Humane Society.
The fire is behind us. The animals are safe. But unexpected expenses have created a gap at a time when homeless animals still need food, medical care, shelter, and second chances.
Together, we are raising $30,000 to keep lifesaving work moving forward and ensure every animal continues to receive the care they deserve.
