Annie is a gorgeous 4‑year‑old “tabico” who’s blossomed into the sweetest lovebug. She came to AARF scared and unsure, but with patience and TLC, she’s shown her true snuggly, affectionate self. She’s lived with cats before and can warm up to new friends with time. Annie still needs a patient home that respects her boundaries, but once she trusts you, she melts.
Onyx is looking fresh after his spa day at @jeep.n.pups grooming salon! This handsome 3‑year‑old is house‑trained, crate‑trained, and a total Velcro dog who loves staying close to his people. He’s well‑mannered, affectionate, relaxed, and gets along well with other dogs, making him an easy, loyal companion for anyone wanting a best friend by their side.

Moo's pups will be ready for fenced yards and forever homes of their own after their vet appointment on Friday 💙 Each pup has been routinely dewormed, and will be microchipped and treated with age-appropriate vaccines. Please message or email for info on the foster & adoptive programs.
Unfortunately, Moo remains in medical foster as we've recently discovered that she is heartworm positive. She will remain in treatment while we get her spayed, have her blind eye removed and get her fully cleared of heartworm.
Getting the puppies into amazing homes is our top priority so we can focus on giving Moo all the healing she deserves.
Please join us in congratulating the adopters of Cinder, Poppy, and Ferdinand, who are all going home this weekend!! Dot may or may not be coming to Red Feather but if Josh asks, I never said anything 🤫

In celebration of International Cat Day on August 8, the Animal Adoption and Rescue Foundation of Winston-Salem (AARF) is launching a weeklong cat and kitten adoption special. From August 3 to 8, community members can adopt a single cat or kitten for $100, or two cats or kittens for $150.
The fee includes spay or neuter surgery, vaccinations, deworming, flea treatments, a FeLV/FIV test, and a microchip.
AARF has many kittens and cats ready for adoption, all viewable at aarfws.org. Some adoptable cats are staying at the AARF House, 302 Thurston Street in Winston-Salem, where visitors can meet them in person. Others are currently living with foster families and will be onsite during AARF’s weekly cat adoption fair on Saturdays from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Prospective adopters can streamline the process by submitting applications in advance at https://www.aarfws.org/adopt-a-cat-kitten.

🏈 Players from the Wake Forest Football team stopped by MLK for a day of fun with Camp Discovery and MLK campers! From playing games and signing autographs to giving away Wake Forest apparel, they made it a memorable experience and left our campers with plenty of smiles and school spirit.
🏃 Sedge Garden Campers stayed active and got plenty of exercise while participating in fun movement activities that kept everyone energized and smiling.
🕷️ MLK Campers showed off their creativity by making some awesome spider crafts. Their imaginative designs were a big hit, and everyone had fun bringing their creepy-crawly creations to life.
🎶 William Roscoe Anderson Jr. Campers had a blast playing Musical Hula Hoops. The game brought lots of laughter, excitement, and friendly competition as campers danced and moved to the music.
🥬 Teens in Action campers spent the morning volunteering at Second Harvest Food Bank, helping support local hunger relief efforts through their service project. We are proud of their dedication to serving our community and making a positive impact.

Formed in Cleveland in 1976, the Dead Boys were one of the first American acts to combine the proto-punk fervor of bands like the Stooges and the New York Dolls with a new level of intense energy. The 1977 debut LP, Young, Loud and Snotty was a landmark album in the birth of hardcore punk and produced one of the first great punk anthems, "Sonic Reducer."
After one more album, the band split in 1979. They reunited for a few gigs in the 1980s, but following the death of lead vocalist Stiv Bators in 1990, the band members went their separate ways except for two brief reunions in 2004 and 2005.

What started as a desperate attempt to save a little foal with severe limb deformities has become one of the most incredible journeys I've ever witnessed. Sundae has faced every challenge with so much determination, and thanks to the extraordinary team at New Bolton and the unwavering support of this community, she now has the chance to grow up surrounded by love.
From the bottom of my heart, thank you to everyone who donated, shared her story, cheered her on, and believed she was worth fighting for. You helped save a tiny but mighty life.

🥾 WHERE TO FIND THEM:
Window Falls: A 1.2-mile round-trip on Indian Creek Trail (park at the Visitors Center) passes Hidden Falls before reaching the larger Window Falls.
Lower Cascades: A scenic 0.8-mile out-and-back with dramatic rock walls and a large pool at the base. Park at 2143 Hall Road, Walnut Cove.
Other Falls: Upper Cascades (from the Visitor Center) and Tory’s Den Falls (from the Tory’s Den lot) are both easy 0.4-mile round trips.

Having spent nearly his entire life with one person and his brother, Jax, almost everything outside that small circle is still new to him. He approaches life carefully, taking time to observe before deciding it’s safe to move forward.
Opie has never known life without Jax. The two have always relied on one another, and their bond is an important source of comfort and confidence. While Jax may be the first to cautiously investigate something new, Opie is never far behind, and together they’ve shown they can adapt to new environments when given time and patience.
When Jax feels safe, his personality begins to shine. He enjoys sniffy walks, watching the world from the front porch, and quietly spending time with the people he trusts. Over the past several weeks, he’s made remarkable progress, choosing to seek out familiar handlers for gentle affection and showing that trust can grow with patience and consistency.

I’m not going to lie, it’s been the hardest year of my life. Losing George a few days after opening really made me lose almost all of my spark and joy, on top of being a small business owner in this day and age, it is beyond difficult. There are many days when I question if it’s worth it.
Then I come in and I see all of your happy faces with your sweet pups (and kitties!) and remember why it’s all worth it and how blessed we are to be in such a wonderful community. Your support continues to allow us to help rescues and shelters and keep feeding pets to help keep them in their homes.
I know times are hard for a lot of us, but please continue to support us, however you can; even if that is a share, or telling your friends, families, co-workers about our store, it helps more than you may know!
We will do a proper PAWty in November to celebrate 5 years of being open, so keep an 👁️ out for that!

She follows me everywhere—even to the shower, where she waits behind the glass so she can lick my legs the moment I step out. She’s not a fan of walks, so we spend our time playing in the backyard. Her greatest joy? Sticks. You can buy every toy on the planet and she’ll still choose a stick every time. She zoomies like a pro and lights up when I pretend I’m going to catch her or boop her as she flies past.
She also has a big extended family who adores her. Her grandparents FaceTime with her every night, her cousins visit from college, and she loves making dog friends - as long as no one touches her toys. And once someone sits on the couch, they’re hers forever. She’ll snuggle right in, drop her big bully head on their chest, and claim them. She even has her own little cabin in Asheville for when she needs a getaway.
I love her so much. She has helped me in immeasurable ways and arrived exactly when I needed her most.

When a horse is missing a tooth, the opposing tooth no longer has anything to wear against. Because horses' teeth continuously erupt throughout their lives, that tooth can keep growing longer than the surrounding teeth, creating a noticeable "step." Left untreated, it can interfere with chewing and lead to additional dental problems.
This is the inside of Siri's mouth. You may remember that when we first rescued her through a law enforcement seizure, she had a badly fragmented and deeply infected molar that required an intensive surgical extraction.
Several years later, and after lots of patience and excellent dental care, Siri has done so well that she's now on a routine annual floating schedule like most of the other Red Feather horses. It's a milestone that doesn't get much attention, but it says a lot about how far she's come.
Last week, our veterinarian completed routine dental exams and floats for eight of our equine friends, helping keep them comfortable, healthy, and able to get the most nutrition from every meal. 🩵

🕰️ BACKGROUND: Founded in 1956 as an artist-run gallery on Trade Street, this institution (formerly SECCA) spent decades at the Hanes estate off Reynolda Road. Now it’s returning downtown, where its story began, while the main campus is closed for renovations through late 2028/early 2029.
➡️ WHAT: A free gallery with contemporary art, a small retail shop, and comfy seating — perfect for remote work, reading, or hanging out.
🔨 WHY: This space allows NCMA Winston-Salem to continue showcasing art and hosting events while the main campus is closed for renovations (reopening late 2028/early 2029).
🎨 ART: The current exhibition, “Unboxed: Art Beyond the Museum,” features works by NC-based artists from the museum’s Portable Gallery outreach program and is on display through August 30.
📅 EVENTS: The gallery will also host events like:
• Open Studio — a new adults-only art meetup
• Vinyl Lounge — bring your own records and enjoy analog sound with fellow music lovers

The film follows a daughter as she reflects on her father's life, weaving the story of his miraculous journey from the streets of India with the realities of life in America. Using recorded phone calls with her dad while he worked nights at a gas station along with home movies past and present, this deeply personal essay film is a meditation on family, the immigrant experience, and the dreams we carry with us.
About the director ➡️ Karla Murthy is an award winning director and news producer. Her work was described by the Columbia Journalism Review as “compelling, informative and compassionate.” In her early career, Karla worked as a producer, shooter, and correspondent for several PBS news programs prior to making her directorial debut with award winning film THE PLACE THAT MAKES US. Her latest film, which she'll be discussing with us on Tuesday, has won Best Documentary Feature at the Nashville Film Festival and the San Diego Asian Film Festival.

Flatland is a discipline of Freestyle BMX riding where tricks are performed by spinning and balancing on a 20-inch bike. Riders will have two timed contest runs where they try to pull the most difficult and creative tricks without touching down the ground.
Registration for riders begins at 9 AM, and the event will begin at approximately 10 AM.
DJ Mark Eaton will be spinning music all day at this family-friendly event, which is free for spectators! Flatland Burgers will be on site serving food, and beverages will be available for purchase at the venue bar.

The Winston-Salem Open returns August 22-29 for its 15th anniversary, and it holds a unique spot on the tennis calendar: it's the final ATP Tour stop before the U.S. Open, with courts specifically designed to mirror those in New York. That timing has helped attract marquee players in past years, including Carlos Alcaraz, Andy Murray, and John Isner.
This year's field features a 48-player singles draw with more than $775,000 in prize money, and more than half of the world's top 50 typically make an appearance. World No. 20 Luciano Darderi and defending champion Márton Fucsovics are already confirmed for 2026.
Tickets start as low as $11. Parking is free. And the Kids' Zone means it's an easy day out for the whole family.

In 1784, Salem's tavern caught fire and burned to the ground. This led to the organization of a system for the community to put out future fires. Large fire engines, like this one, could be moved to the fire by two or three people when empty. To pump the engine, it required a crew of twelve men, with six on each side. Another twelve men were on standby to provide relief. Water flows freely from the hose when the system is under sixty to eighty pounds of pressure.

Our Digital Dome is full of different kinds of shows, with fan favorites being our Live Planetarium Shows and Musical Laser Matinee programs. We wanted to celebrate what makes our Digital Dome so special, so we threw a party about it!
On June 27, last month, we experienced the Kaleideum’s Digital Dome Theater completely FREE with our museum admission or membership!
Our Digital Dome staff enjoyed giving you laser light shows, live planetarium tour, family-friendly movies, trivia, Dome Karaoke, and more! In LASTEAM, we had zoetropes, flipbooks, and shadow projectors for you to see, experience, and enjoy.

Also, shout out to Ben and the rest of our friends at @forgottenroadales who absolutely killed it at the US Beer Cup. They earned 7 medals, were ranked the No.4 overall Brewery in the US, and won Best Brewery in the 250-500 BBL category. Huge Congrats!
