We are so profoundly touched by the outpouring of support we’ve received over the past two weeks. I made that initial post in about five minutes on Canva after an especially stressful week at the shop.
I expected some community support, but I never could have predicted what happened next. We’ve been packed out for the last two weeks straight. We’ve had to increase our daily pars just to keep up and keep ourselves from selling out, and at one point we actually had to close down because we were insanely over capacity.
Like so many lifelong cooks and chefs, opening a restaurant was always a dream of mine. I’m incredibly blessed that I got to do it with my best friend and baby mama, Heff.
I’ll be the first to admit that I was extremely naive during that first year or so. I made basically every mistake in the book. But with the love, support, and partnership of my family, especially my aunt and my mother, we were able to turn Heff’s into what it is today.
We’ve won awards. We’ve been on national TV. We’ve fed famous rappers, wrestlers, actors, and everyone in between. But honestly, the greatest satisfaction I receive is watching my community, my Winston-Salem, show up for us every single day.
Our regulars. Our familiar faces. Our unhoused friends we’ve come to know and love. The people who have supported us since day one and the people who just discovered us yesterday.
From the absolute bottom of our hearts, thank you. We love you all more than you know.
With that being said…
HEFF’S LIVES TO FIGHT ANOTHER DAY ‼️‼️‼️
Because of your overwhelming support, we’ve been able to catch up a little bit. We still need you to show up, but for the first time in a while, we can finally see a glimpse of the path forward.

A question we were asked today was, “Are there any cute pigs left?”
YES. 46 ADORABLE pigs are still waiting. 🥹
We started this rescue with 163 pigs, 163 lives who were neglected, overcrowded, and desperately needed someone to fight for them. Since then, we have worked tirelessly to get them safe, healthy, vetted, spayed/neutered, vaccinated, and ready for the next chapter of their lives.
And now… we’re down to 46.
Forty-six sweet, deserving pigs who are praying for a family to love them, protect them, and let them finally experience what every animal deserves: safety, comfort, kindness, and a life where they are loved instead of used.
This is what our mission is about. We don’t rescue animals simply to move them from one place to another. We rescue them because their lives matter. We believe they deserve the opportunity to live out their lives as individuals, not commodities, breeding machines, or someone’s source of profit.
But we need your help to finish what we started.
These pigs are still at our staging location, and we desperately need to get every single one of them into safe, permanent homes before the weather turns cold. They have already survived so much. They should not have to spend another winter waiting.

Summer and winter are especially challenging seasons at the sanctuary, and it is only with the selfless commitment of our staff & volunteers that we are able to support all of the animals in our care no matter what the weather brings us. Like the postal service, we work in the rain, heat and snow!
Red Feather has an enrollment of around 70 regular volunteers who provide ongoing monthly service hours. We also have a team of 5 paid staff who collectively cover 7 days a week of animal care.
Running a sanctuary is an absolutely Herculean effort. While I hope we make it look easy, it would be a disservice to the blood, sweat and tears of our caregiving community to not point out the immense amount of physical & emotional labor that is behind every full belly and smiling animal face.
Drop our team a note to let them know how much you appreciate their service to the animals! ❤️

He’s fully house-trained, has impeccable manners, loves car rides, and gets along beautifully with other dogs after proper introductions.
He’s also quite the character. He’ll stand patiently for his morning cool-air blowout, keep watch while you shower, and happily accept fresh apples or carrots as payment for his services. 🤭
Ceasar loves cozy sweaters, especially during thunderstorms, and prefers classic vests that leave his paws free. He thrives in a quiet, predictable home with minimal stairs and enjoys respectful children who understand that he needs a little extra gentle care. Cats, however, make him feel unsettled, so he would do best in a cat-free home.
Like many seniors, Ceasar can occasionally experience some evening confusion, but his “foggy” days have become much less frequent with his current food and medication.🙂
Ceasar doesn’t need a high-energy lifestyle. Give him a soft bed, a steady routine, some snacks, and plenty of love, and you’ll have one very happy gentleman!

🩺 We had a great turnout for this month’s Recreation Health Community Health Fair at Carl H. Russell! It was a wonderful afternoon connecting with neighbors and providing helpful health resources to keep our community thriving. Thank you to everyone who stopped by and took a step toward a healthier lifestyle with us!
⛳️ A huge congrats to Mark Kriston on winning the 79th Forsyth Championship! We want to thank everyone that came out to participate in the tournament and a special shout-out to @parrishtirecompany for presenting the event.

Face to Face Speaker Forum and a/perture cinema are partnering to host a series of film screenings called “Face to Face Goes to the Movies” inspired by the speakers coming to Winston-Salem for Face to Face’s sixth season during 2026–2027.
The first screening in the film series will be Tuesday, August 25, 2026, at 6:30 p.m. a/perture will present the film “Harriet,” starring Cynthia Erivo in the title role. “Harriet” is a biographical film that tells the extraordinary tale of Harriet Tubman’s escape from slavery and transformation into one of America’s greatest heroes. Tubman’s courage, ingenuity and tenacity freed hundreds of slaves and changed the course of history.
Other films in the series will be:
Tuesday, October 6, 2026, a screening of “The American Revolution Episode 6: The Most Sacred Thing (May 1780–Onward)” by documentarian and historian Ken Burns.
November 10, 2026, the 1999 cult classic film “Office Space.”
February 9, 2027, “We Feed People,” a 2022 documentary film directed by Ron Howard about José Andrés and the World Central Kitchen.
March 23, 2027, the classic American sports comedy “Caddyshack.”
The screening of Ken Burns’s “The American Revolution Episode 6: The Most Sacred Thing (May 1780–Onward)” will be free. The other screenings will be $8 per person or a pass for all the films can be purchased for $30.

We tried the LADYKILLER, SPORTY SPICE, LIL’ DAWG, PLAIN FONDA, KIDS GRILLED CHZ, RAM RANCH CHZ FRIES, and CHILI NELSON CHZ FRIES. 🤤
Everything was so good, but the RAM RANCH CHZ FRIES were definitely my favorite!

Located at 560 Trade Street just down the street from the venue, The B String was started by Mike and Tammy Bennett, April 17, 2007 as their “dream store."
After 30 years of playing and working on guitars, Mike and Tammy decided that a small neighborhood guitar store would be a good fit with the Arts District. They were right, as guitarists have come out of the woodwork in response to the street's latest addition.
Part of the reason is that Mike and Tammy are very friendly people. The other reason is Mike is a talented musician and expert guitar tech / historian. He is a Certified Fender Tech and generally knows more about guitars than just about anyone. Mike has the admiration and respect of every guitarist that knows him.
Having played professionally for the last 34 years, Mike has a handle on any style or approach to the guitar, as his interests in music are as diverse as his selection of guitars.

🏛️ BACKGROUND: Frank owned this building while working in historic real estate. When he stopped using it as an office, he leaned into his love of history and book collections, starting with antiques before shifting toward books.
🔄 HOW IT WORKS: Frank finds most items himself, but you can also bring in your own to sell. He’s a book expert and a delight to talk to about his latest finds.

Jiff & Biscuit have each tried on a few different Red Feather friendships over the years but they always come back to each other. We love their bond.
Several weeks ago, we noticed that Jiff had lost some weight and we had our vet give him a full workup including CBC blood chemistry, which all came back normal. His EPM titers were on the high range of normal, so even though we did not have a positive result, we opted to go ahead and treat him with a full course of the meds anyhow. It seems to be working as his weight and attitude has already improved! He also gets his feet done every four weeks instead of the typical 6 week cycle, due to a condition called DSLD which has to be meticulously managed.
Biscuit is on a daily thyroid medication along with probiotics for gut health. She has no grinding surface left on her aged teeth, so she can only eat mashes and chopped hay. As a mule, she is prone to being overweight so we have to carefully oversee her diet & food intake to reduce her risk for obesity.
Their care is expensive, time consuming and complicated. These treatments may sound like luxuries, but we strongly feel that every horse deserves to have their needs met in this way. The therapies I'm describing, while complex, are actually just basic routine & preventative care for aged equines.
Help us normalize a higher standard of care for our horse friends in the world. They deserve it.

But while you’re searching for Callie, we hope you’ll also take a minute to get to know the girl behind the adventures. 💕
Callie is a sweet, one-and-a-half-year-old playful girl who came to us when her family couldn't give her the attention she needed anymore. She loves to play, has done well with older kids, and gets along nicely with other dogs in the right settings.
Callie is currently learning to ride in a stroller. She can be reactive to other dogs when leash-walking, but most dogs can stay calmer in a stroller. She's learning the cue "up, up" to hop in, and she's already enjoying rides around the shelter. Once she's fully trained, her adopter will have an easy way to take her out for fresh air, sunshine, and people-watching without the stress of leash reactivity. 🤩
Callie does best as the only pet with a food bowl in sight. She can be protective of her food and toys, so she needs a home without other animals crowding her space. She isn't a good fit for homes with cats. She also needs time and patient introductions to feel safe around men.
Callie wants a home where she can feel secure and doesn't have to compete for love, food, or attention. With some patience and follow-through on her individualized success plan, she could be a wonderful, loyal companion.
