2 weeks ago she was broken and dying. When we arrived at the hoarding property, she was one of the first pigs I noticed. She was lying there… and she didn’t even lift her head when we lived on her. She was completely defeated. She had given up. Penny Lane had spent her entire life surviving, not thriving. And when you looked at her body, you could see it. Every bone. Every rib. It was like looking at an x-ray. I remember thinking about how many pigs had already died out there from starvation… and how badly I did not want Penny Lane to be one of them. Then the state placed the pigs under a 2-week quarantine, and it was heartbreaking knowing we had to do everything we could just to keep her alive until we could move them. But the moment she arrived at our staging location, everything changed. She was greeted with a bowl of food. Fresh salad. Pain medication. Gentle hands. And slowly… Penny Lane started coming back to life. Deworming. Vaccines. Good food. Safety. Love. Today she’s letting us give her baths. She’s been playing in the mud. And when you stop and look at her little face… you can’t help but notice something incredible. She’s smiling. Two weeks ago you could see every bone in her body. Today her belly is filling out and her spirit is returning. And Penny is not the only one. There are so many pigs just like her from this case who are now beginning their journey toward healing. But caring for 163 rescued pigs is an ENORMOUS undertaking. The vet care alone is STAGGERING and we are going through mountains of feed every single day. Before this rescue we were feeding 92 pigs. Now we are caring for well over 260!!!! We have many critical supplies listed on our Amazon wishlist, and bags of feed are always deeply appreciated. Most importantly, these pigs will need loving adoptive homes and continued donations so we can keep this rescue mission going. Penny Lane is proof of what happens when people come together for animals who had been forgotten. She is alive, healing, and her story is only just beginning. Last week at Recreation and Parks: 🪁 High-flying fun took over Sedge Garden Community Center for our kite-flying event! It was a beautiful morning spent watching neighbors design their own custom creations and fill the sky with color. Whether you brought your own or built one at the park, it was a fantastic way to enjoy the fresh air and community spirit together. 🐾 Pups in the Park brought all the tails wagging to Washington Park! It was a paws-itively awesome afternoon bringing together pet lovers, local advocacy groups, and rescue organizations for a fun-filled community day. We loved seeing all the pups making new friends and enjoying a beautiful day in the sun with their favorite humans! A huge thank you to all the vendors who came out and participated to make this event so special! 🌳 Read and Roam with Little Rangers was a hit at Miller Park! It was a beautiful morning for our little explorers to discover plants and animals at a gentle pace, followed by a cozy children’s story underneath the shade of the shelter. Our next Read and Roam will be at Little Creek Park on April 1 from 10:15 a.m. – 11:00 a.m. We can’t wait to see you there! 🏀 Our Future Athletes: Little Hoopers program was a slam dunk! It was an incredible four weeks watching our 3 and 4-year-olds develop their motor skills, coordination, and confidence while learning the fundamentals of basketball. We are so proud of these little athletes for their hard work and teamwork on the court! 🎨 We had a fun time at Crafty Things with Specialized & Adaptive Recreation at the Martin L. King, Jr. Community Center. We made tape resist art with a March theme. If you missed out, don’t worry! March 9, 1776✒️📜 “Lieut. Harnedon returned from Cross Creek with his little company of twelve Light Horsemen, who were going to their homes. They brought Br. Bagge a letter from Col. Armstrong, dated Cross Creek, March 5th, which confirmed the report which we heard on the 6th, saying that on Feb. 27th, sixteen miles above Wilmington, the Scotch army had been defeated by Caswell's army, some 70 men had been killed, and all the rest taken prisoner; those who laid down their arms and took the oath were released, but the officers were taken as prisoners to Hallifax town. All the stores in Cross Creek except three had been closed, awaiting an order from Congress. Our store will probably lose by this, as most of the recently purchased salt is still there.” The flurry of military activity as troops passed through Wachovia during February 1776 had culminated in the Battle of Moore's Creek Bridge, fought on February 27th. A Loyalist army composed of men from the Yadkin and Haw River region, as well as Scottish Highlanders who had settled in the Cross Creek (modern Fayetteville) area, clashed with a Whig force commanded by Richard Caswell 30 miles northwest of Wilmington. In the one-sided battle, as many as 70 Loyalists were killed as they charged Whig fortifications. The Whigs lost only one man. Today @MooresCreekNationalBattlefield is preserved and interpreted by the National Park Service.

🚨Imagine saying yes to 167 lives at once.🚨 That’s EXACTLY what we did. Imagine looking at 167 animals who have known nothing but neglect, starvation, infection, and fear… and deciding their lives matter enough to step in knowing this would cost $167k+ That’s what happened here. This week we removed every single pig from the worst location in this hoarding case. They are finally safe from that location. But rescue was only step one. Now comes the part most people never see and where the HUGE expenses come in. Every single pig is being: • spayed or neutered • vaccinated • dewormed • treated for infections • given rabies protection • evaluated by multiple veterinarians And for some of them, the care goes even deeper. General has struggled to walk for a long time. Last night he was so weak we had to hand-feed him dinner. Today he received advanced joint injections from Dr. Hawkins, one of the country’s TOP veterinary surgeons. This is specialized care that many beloved pets never even receive, but these pigs deserve that chance. We are not just checking boxes. We are doing everything possible to give these survivors real lives. Dr. Swink and her team have been here. Dr. Hawkins has been here multiple times. Dr. Luke entered into our beautiful network of vets this week taking care of our holistic needs. Our team is working around the clock through the River Center for Compassionate Care to make sure NO animal is overlooked. Caring for 167 rescued pigs is an enormous undertaking. Food. Medications. Daily veterinary care. Emergency treatments. Ongoing surgeries. Housing. Transports. Hoof/tusk care We already have tens of thousands in veterinary bills, including a $5K hospital bill at UGA for little Harper, who is still fighting. Rescuing them was only the beginning. Now we have to heal them. If you want to stand with these pigs and be part of this rescue, please consider donating. Every dollar helps us continue the medical care they desperately need. Cinder is back at Red Feather where she belongs ❤️ She was discharged from Virginia Tech yesterday and we brought her home last night. Cinder is now on strict stall rest for four weeks as she recovers from emergency colic surgery. We’re slowly reintroducing her feed and following a pain management protocol that includes daily digestive support to prevent gastric ulcers from the stress of the ordeal. There is still a long road ahead, but we are beyond grateful that the hardest step is behind us. It’s been an extremely emotional week. Every horse here is a literal family member to us. We see them every day. We know their favorite scratchy spots, the treats they like best, and who their friends are. We try to learn as much as we can about the lives they had before coming here so we can protect their spirits and give them the support they deserve. When one of them isn’t feeling well, our whole team feels it. Having Cinder in the hospital felt like a piece of our hearts was missing. Thank you to everyone who has supported her during this crisis. Her surgery and hospitalization came in just under $10,000, and we are incredibly grateful for any contributions that help us cover this emergency expense so we can continue caring for Cinder and the rest of the herd. www.redfeatherfarmnc.org

Our team has been working nonstop at the staging location to give these pigs a real chance. Volunteers have shown up, temporary shelter has been set up, and vet appointments are being secured as quickly as possible to help stabilize every pig coming through. Kane needs a foster or adopter! Kane is the kind of puppy who does not just wag his tail. He wags his entire back half like joy starts somewhere near his shoulders and spills out the back. When he is especially excited, he adds a tiny gremlin growl, a squeaky little motor revving up before takeoff. It is comedy gold in puppy form. His hobbies are many and taken very seriously and include tennis ball performance art, bone enthusiast, and cardboard wrestling. Kane is comfortable on a leash and beginning to learn early leash manners. He is confident, curious, and eager to move through the world on his own four paws. New space? He is in. New sound? Investigating. New adventure? Lead the way. Crate training is going beautifully. Kane settles quickly, has had no accidents in his crate in over a week, and sleeps soundly. He still needs a quick potty break in the middle of the night but otherwise sleeps like a log. When he powers down, he is completely out. Nothing interrupts a well earned puppy recharge. Potty training is a work in progress and he is trying hard to get it right. He will hold it until he is taken outside every 20m he's awake. When he is in his pen while his foster parents are working, he reliably uses his pee pads like the very best boy. He is still learning how to clearly communicate that he needs to go, but the foundation is strong and improving every day. Future family note: Kane is going to grow into a big, strong dog with an active mind and body. He will not be content as a decorative couch accessory. He will thrive in a home that enjoys walks, training, play sessions, and giving his clever brain a job to do. He naps hard, yes, but he earns those naps. Kane is affectionate, confident, food motivated, playful, and wonderfully full of life. He brings energy to your afternoons and the coziest snuggles to your evenings.

Thursday update on Cinder: Overall, she is doing “fine.” Not great, but okay. Her bloodwork had stabilized as of this morning, but our sweet girl is still not eating. The team at Virginia Tech is continuing to monitor her closely and provide the very best care available. It’s absolutely killing us knowing she’s experiencing so much stress and pain. All we want is to bring her home, where she belongs. They said the biggest step toward that happening is for her to start eating again. For now, Cinder will remain at the hospital through at least the weekend, and I’ll be driving up to spend the day with her on Saturday. The timing has been brutal. As if there’s ever a good time for something like this. At the same time Cinder has been fighting for her life, we’ve also been deeply involved in helping coordinate support for the Morganton pig hoarding case alongside several other rescue partners. If anything, it’s just another reminder that the world needs more helping hands like ours, not less. I fully believe in Cinder. She’s tough in that quiet mustang way. I believe she’s going to recover. I just know it. If you’d like to stand with Cinder while she fights her way through this, donations toward her care are deeply appreciated. 🏥HARPER WAS RUSHED TO UGA🏥 He was in the very last group of pigs we pulled from the hoarding property. And he is fighting for his life. Harper has been struggling to survive since he was just a piglet. His body is COVERED in severe mange, his skin encrusted and painful. Parasites are literally eating him alive, inside and out. He is passing countless worms and shaking uncontrollably as his body struggles to maintain its temperature. Yet somehow… he is still here. Still trying. Still hoping someone will help him. Last night, our dear friend @jeanrhode_ rushed Harper to UGA, where the veterinary team said he was terrified. It was almost a miracle they were able to draw enough blood for testing. His intake was $500, and today’s diagnostics are estimated between $3,000–$4,000 — just for sedation, x-rays, ultrasound, and basic testing. And this is only 1 pig. There are 163 pigs in this hoarding case. This is why we have been telling everyone this rescue will easily become a $200,000+ case. We already lost Susie Q, and it broke us. She never got the chance she deserved. We cannot lose Harper too. Despite everything he’s endured, Harper is incredibly sweet. You can see it in his eyes, he wants to trust. He wants love. If he survives this, we believe he and his best friend Winston could one day finally know what it feels like to be safe… even be someone’s lap pigs. But first, we have to save his life. This rescue began with a severe hoarding and neglect situation. 🐷🚨 Rescue work is hard work. It is honest, hands on, exhausting work. It is also work that matters, not only for the lives we are saving, but for the people doing it, the volunteers showing up, the transporters on the road, the adopters opening their homes, and the supporters who refuse to look away. 🐷💔🤝 We do this because freedom should not be rare. No animal should live trapped in neglect, starvation, or cruelty. Every pig deserves safety, care, and the chance to be a pig without fear. 🕊️🌿 But I need you to hear me. Meet our sweet girl, Kilt! This 5-month-old girl is as loving as they come!❤️ She’s currently working on potty training and making great progress. With her eagerness to please and quick learning skills, she’s well on her way to mastering it in her forever home. She’s a total cuddle bug who thrives on being close to her people. Whether it’s curling up in a lap for a nap or snuggling at bedtime, she’s happiest by your side. She’s building confidence with short periods of separation and will do best with a family that continues helping her feel safe and secure.🐾 Highly food motivated, she’s both enthusiastic about mealtime and easy to train. (A slow feeder works great to pace her excitement!) She already knows or is learning “sit,” “come,” “leave it,” “off,” and “no.” She’s very smart and genuinely wants to please. She does wonderfully with other dogs and is gentle and respectful with cats. She has also done well with older children and responds appropriately to redirection when she gets a little playful and nippy.🤩 She enjoys playing with her toys and can happily entertain herself, but her favorite place will always be near her humans. She’s not kennel trained, as she prefers sleeping close to her people, and she sleeps soundly through the night. Affectionate, loyal, and full of love, this special girl will make a devoted companion. He has the biggest smile, the kind that stops you in your tracks. When I was walking the property, he came up to me and followed me the entire time. Slowly. Quietly. Never taking his eyes off me. Just smiling. This boy has most definitely seen better days. He has mange, pig lice, and is severely neglected. And yet… his love for people is unreal. After everything he has endured, he still chooses trust. He still chooses connection. He still chooses us. This is one of the worst hoarding cases any of us have seen in over a decade of rescue work. The animals are in horrific condition. The number of urgent spays and neuters is overwhelming. 163 innocent lives are depending on all of us to move quickly. We have sent press releases. We have reached out to news stations. We have heard nothing back. So we are begging you, if you are reading this, please tag every news anchor you can think of. Share this post far and wide. We need traction. We need adopters. We need help getting these babies seen. Even once they are moved to the staging area, we only have two months to place them. This is crunch time. We need to raise at least $1,000 immediately to get Kevin to safety and start his medical treatment. He has a bonded friend, and we will make sure they stay together. He cannot be left behind. If you didn’t know — Tommy’s coffee shop was named one of USA Today’s best coffee shops in America, and it’s easy to see why. The coffee is great, the vibe is welcoming, and every corner of the place has a story. Almost every piece of art and artifact inside has its own history, and Tommy is the kind of guy who will happily tell you about it. It’s 11PM and I just pulled into a hotel in Morganton, NC to head to the hoarding case location early tomorrow morning. We’re beyond exhausted. Our team has been burning our candles from both ends and we know we’ll be doing this until every pig has left the staging area and are into wonderful homes. We want to give you a glimpse of what your support has already made possible. These photos are proof of action. Proof of promises kept. Since stepping into this horrific hoarding case, we have worked tirelessly to begin restoring dignity to these precious lives. Every pig who has been moved has received dewormer and/or vaccinations. We have already completed 11 neuters. We are carefully staging transports, setting up safe housing, and beginning the long road to proper vetting and rehabilitation. We meant it when we said we would fight for them. But here is the hard truth: we cannot finish this without you. On average, it will cost $1,000 per pig to cover transport, veterinary care, food, supplies, and staging. With 163 pigs and potentially more if pregnancies progress, this is an enormous undertaking. We have fulfilled our promises in direct proportion to the donations that have come in… but momentum has slowed, and we are nowhere near the funding needed to see this through to the end. That makes us nervous. Because these babies are counting on us. They are of every size, shape, and breed. They are neglected, but they are kind. They are scared, but they are loving. And we promise you, they are already well on their way back to health because we are being incredibly diligent with their care. We also desperately need adopters. These pigs deserve homes where they will never again know filth, fear, or abandonment. If you have ever considered opening your heart and home, now is the time. Last week, these beautiful lives were pulled from a house filled with toxic air and poison, a place where they were slowly dying. Today… look at them. Soft blankets. Clean bedding. Warmth. Safety. Tiny piglets nursing their mamas without fear. For the first time in a long time, they can simply rest. This is a family of 20. Every little boy has already been neutered by Dr. Hawkins. They’ve been dewormed. Vaccinated. Vetted. And they already have loving homes waiting. In two short weeks, they’ll be heading to greener pastures and brand-new beginnings. They are safe. But 143 other pigs are not. We have transported so many to a staging location near our farm, and they are only allowed to stay there for 60 days. After that… their lives are at risk again. Many are emaciated. Filled with parasites. Covered in mange. Covered in pig lice. Some are so weak they can barely stand. We’ve already lost one to the severity of the neglect.
