Meet our beautiful Chloe! 🤩 Chloe is a 5-year-and-6-month-old long-haired lady with soft fur, striking green eyes, and a thoughtful approach to life. She prefers a quieter pace and enjoys spending time near her people rather than being the center of attention. Chloe is looking for a calm home that will give her time to settle in and let her set the pace for friendship. Once she settles in, Chloe likes companionship on her own terms. She may follow you from room to room, supervise your daily activities, or lounge nearby while you relax for the evening. She enjoys cozy spots, high perches, scratchers, and the occasional Churu treat. Chloe would do best as the only cat in the home. Because the shelter environment isn't her style, Chloe is currently available to meet through foster care. Sundae is out of surgery! 💜 Hopefully, the hardest part of Sundae's journey is finally behind her. Dr. Ortved called me just a few minutes ago to let me know that Sundae is awake and recovering. During surgery, they made the decision to fuse her entire knee joint on this leg, rather than just the lower portion like they were able to do on the first leg. Because of her unusual anatomy, it became clear during the procedure that a full fusion would give her the best chance at a stable, comfortable future. That's exactly why she was at New Bolton Center. I'm so incredibly grateful for Dr. Ortved and the entire surgical team who have cared so deeply for our tiny girl. Our hospital bill as of this morning, before today's surgery, was already $14,137. By the time Sundae comes home, we're expecting the total to be close to $30,000. I have to admit, I'm still a little disappointed that none of the famous Steves ever heard about Project Steve. One yes could have changed everything. But we'll keep pushing forward like we always do. We'll keep praying, keep fundraising, and keep brainstorming because this little horse has fought far too hard for us to do anything less. For today, though, I'm choosing relief over worry. Sundae made it through surgery. She's recovering in the very best hands. And for the first time in a while, it really feels like we're turning the corner. 💜

Sundae is having surgery today. Thank you to every single person who has checked on her, sent kind messages, prayed, crossed your fingers, or donated toward her care. Facing not one, but two major surgeries on a tiny little foal has been incredibly scary. Add to that the fact that she's been away from home for more than a month now, and the reality of the medical bills... it's been a heavy place to be sometimes. Your love has been felt. 💜 Sundae is in the very best hands at New Bolton Center, and we truly believe these surgeries are her only chance at a comfortable, meaningful life. Watching these videos again from before her first surgery just reinforces that for me. She is only about seven months old, and she already had arthritis in her knees. Babies shouldn't have arthritis. We hoped corrective shoeing would buy her some comfort, and while it did help straighten her legs, it also changed the angle of her fetlock and pastern in a way that put even more stress on her knees. We were solving one problem while creating another. It became clear that surgery wasn't just an option. It was her chance. So today, she undergoes her second world-class surgery. This one will permanently fuse her knee joint to provide the stability her little body simply can't achieve on its own. Most horses never get an opportunity like this. I don't take that for granted for one second. I truly believe Sundae found her way to Red Feather for a reason. I'm going to ask one more time for your help. Sundae's medical costs are expected to exceed $30,000, and we're still a long way from reaching that goal. I'm sharing that because I want to be honest with you. I don't know exactly how we'll get there, but I have to believe the same kind of magic that brought Sundae to us will carry us through the rest of her journey. Please keep Sundae and her incredible surgical team in your thoughts today. In the fall of 2025, @melsobo and I toured the NYC carriage horse stables to document and bear witness to the horses. What we found felt like nothing short of neglect. That is when I met Diego. He was tied to a wall on a sidewalk waiting to be hooked to a carriage. The first thing I noticed were his protruding hip bones, his fetlocks were swollen, and when he walked his balance felt uneven to me, especially in that back left leg. It was subtle, but it stayed with me. Months later I watched the February 2026 video of the carriage horse falling. I did not realize it was him at first. But when he finally stood, I recognized the Saddlebred by how high he carried his head. He was the same horse from that sidewalk. What broke me was how hard it was for him to rise. Anyone who has cared for arthritic horses knows that struggle. These are only my personal observations, not a diagnosis. A full veterinary exam is the only way to know for sure. But I have seen this before. And once you recognize it, you never forget it. We need to end NYC carriage rides now. We’ll see you at city hall July 15th #retirediego

We have some truly wonderful news today! I am absolutely beaming from ear to ear as I announce the adoption of THREE owner-surrendered horses who have been part of our foster program. We're very active in our community, networking and supporting horse owners through difficult seasons. Many of those stories never make it to social media, for a variety of reasons. So two of these faces won't be familiar to you, but they are beloved members of the Red Feather family all the same. Please join me in congratulating the adoptive families of... 🌞 SOLEIL (now Penny Lane) Penny had been living alone in a cow pasture for years. A caring neighbor advocated for her and eventually convinced her owner to transfer her to Red Feather so she could finally receive the veterinary care she needed. Our veterinarian diagnosed ringbone in one of her front legs, but with consistent farrier care and daily anti-inflammatories, she's doing wonderfully. Today she lives in a small herd with horse friends and a mom who absolutely adores her. 🩰 DANCER had never lived with other horses until she entered our foster program over a year ago after her owner entered hospice care. Her family reached out to rescues across the state, but no one had room to help. We delivered feed, hay, and supplies for months until a foster home became available. Over the last year, Dancer learned how to simply be a horse. She also formed an incredible bond with one of her caretakers... who recently decided to make their relationship official. ❤️ 🤍 LACY was deeply loved by her owner until a divorce forced a hard decision. She has severe asthma, and I was honestly beside myself imagining this sweet mare ending up somewhere that couldn't (or wouldn't) provide the medication she needs just to breathe. Thankfully, our community stepped up. We found her an incredible home with a dear friend of the farm, where she'll receive the care—and the love—she deserves for the rest of her life. These adoptions may not have come from dramatic rescues or auction lots, but they matter just as much. Sometimes keeping a horse safe means stepping in before there's ever a crisis. Happy Freedom Day, in more ways than one ❤️🤍💙

Meet JJ! At just 3 months old, JJ has already been through more than any puppy should. He was found as a stray with a painful leg injury and brought to a local shelter. AARF stepped in to give him the chance he deserved. On Tuesday, JJ underwent FHO (Femoral Head Ostectomy) surgery, and we're happy to share that he is recovering beautifully. Despite everything he's experienced, JJ hasn't let it dim his spirit. His tail still wags, he still wants to love everyone he meets, and he continues to show the sweet, resilient personality that made us all fall in love with him. Now his job is simple: rest, recover, and soak up the love of his amazing foster family. Our job is to make sure he has everything he needs along the way. JJ's surgery and follow-up care will cost about $1,500, and we're hoping that you and our community can come together to help cover those expenses. Our fosters immediately opened their doors, their hearts, and their homes, making sure every animal had a safe place to land during an uncertain time. What was meant to be temporary quickly became forever for Fancy. 🐾 Moments like this are possible because of people like our fosters. They stepped up without hesitation, gave animals comfort when they needed it most, and reminded us that compassion isn’t confined to a building, it’s found in our community. While we’re celebrating this incredible happy ending, we’re also continuing to recover from the unexpected costs of the fire. Through our Built on Compassion Campaign, we’re working to raise $30,000 to help cover fire-related expenses so we can continue providing lifesaving care to every animal who needs us. On Wednesday, July 15, the NYC Council Health Committee will hold a City Hall public hearing on Romanch’s Law (Intro 943), formerly named Ryder’s Law but renamed in honor of the teenager who was tragically killed June 18th by a runaway carriage. Romanch’s Law will permanently END NYC’s horse carriages and offer carriage horses the retirement they deserve in loving sanctuary homes where they can finally run free on grass. 📍 City Hall – Lower Manhattan ⏰ Arrive by 8:30 AM (Broadway security entrance) 📣 9:00 AM Rally 🏛️ 10:00 AM Public Hearing & Public Testimony 🔗 Sign up to testify at the link in our bio or: council.nyc.gov/testify Select the “Committee on Health” hearing on July 15 at 10:00 AM. You can testify in person, by Zoom, or in writing, but IN PERSON is most effective. Last month, 16-year-old carriage horse Deniz collapsed and died while pulling tourists. One week later, 18-year-old Romanch Mahajan was killed in the eighth violent horse carriage incident in the past year. No amount of new regulations or “reforms “can prevent the next horse from spooking and killing someone. It must be ended. At the July 15 hearing, Romanch’s devastated family will be joined by equine experts, national animal welfare organizations, local advocates, concerned New Yorkers, and horse sanctuaries. But we can’t do it alone. We need you there! Bring water and snacks. Never underestimate your pet's level of curiosity, and keep them far away from fireworks. 🔥 Always keep matches and lighter fluid out of your pet's reach. ☀️ Do not apply any sunscreen or insect repellent products that aren't labeled for specific use on animals. Always read the labels before applying to your pet. 🗑️ If you set off fireworks at home, make sure you thoroughly clean up the area afterward. Make sure all trash and any remaining materials from the fireworks are picked up before allowing your pet access to the area again. 💥 If your pet has a fear of loud noises, there are a couple of ways you can help. Something as simple as turning on music, moving your pet to an interior room with no windows, or partnering with your veterinarian to discuss anti-anxiety medication. #petsafety #4thofjuly #forsythhumanesociety #compassioninaction #fireworks
