Day 3: Remembering Local History during Black History Month George H. Black was a nationally known brick maker with an outstanding reputation for quality and durability. He worked from as early as the 1920s until his death in 1980 at the age of 101. As the son of a former enslaved person, Black came to Winston-Salem as a boy, hauling bricks for a white brick maker before starting his own brickyard. He continued to make bricks by hand for decades, teaching others the art of… this dying craft well into his nineties. A historical marker can be found at 111 Dellabrook Road. The Depot Street Renaissance mural by @leorucker represents the contributions of just a few of the many individuals, businesses and institutions that made the neighborhood that is now the Innovation Quarter a prestigious community and a thriving hub of Black enterprise.
