Join us every day in February as we highlight the people and places in the Depot Street Renaissance mural in honor of the Black community that once thrived in the Innovation Quarter. #bhm2022 #blackhistoryisamericanhistory #history Day 1: Remembering Local History during Black History Month Sankofa is a word in the Akan Twi and Fante languages of Ghana that translates to “retrieve.” The stylized Adinkra symbol of Sankofa is often… represented by this heart shape or a bird with its head turning backward. According to Leo Rucker, the artist behind the Depot Street Renaissance, the Sankofa heart on this mural represents “learning from the past to build for the future.” The Depot Street Renaissance mural by Leo Rucker represents the contributions of just a few of the many individuals, businesses and institutions that made the neighborhood that is now the Innovation Quarter a prestigious community and a thriving hub of Black enterprise. Visit the mural on 7th Street between Research Pkwy and Vine St. #bhm #blacklivesmatter #blackhistory #history
