What is a community cat? “Community cats are unowned cats who live outdoors. However, community cats, also called feral or outdoor cats, are generally not socia…lized, or friendly, to people and can’t live indoors.” – Alley Cat Allies. Community cats are likely the single largest source of cat overpopulation since some studies suggest that upwards of 90% of pet cats are sterilized. These cats make up a large portion of the animals that end up in shelters and raise euthanasia rates since most are not socialized and cannot be adopted out. What can we do to help? Why spay and neuter of course! Special programs referred to as TNR, or trap, neuter, return are quite effective at humanely reducing the community cat population. TNR allows cats to live out their lives naturally. Over time the size of cat colonies is reduced and nuisance calls taper off. To help with this issue locally, Humane Solution began a TNR assistance program in 2019 and we have TNR’d over 1,000 community cats in that time.
