Day 10: Remembering Local History during Black History Month In 1977, Virginia Newell was one of two Black women to be elected to Winston-Salem’s Board of Alderman, which later became part of Winston-Salem’s city council. Newell championed racial equality, fair-housing and equal rights while representing the city’s East Ward. In addition to her position on the board, she is remembered as a gifted professor and computer-science advocate at Winston-Salem State University.
